Thanks to his tight schedule, Eli wasn’t able to plan a get-together with Charlie until the following weekend. As it currently stood, on Friday, Eli would go over to Charlie’s place, and Charlie would cook. Charlie hadn’t told him what he planned to make, but he’d quizzed Eli on his food preferences, allergies, and how much spice Eli could handle. Eli was certain he was in for a culinary journey.

In the meantime, they texted practically every minute of the day. Jokes. Pictures of their lunch. Little work gripes. Everything.

On Thursday evening, when Eli was once again bored and alone in the fire station, and their date was a mere day away, he sent Charlie a picture of himself lounging against the firefighter’s pole with his shirt rucked up above his defined stomach. That earned him a dozen heart emojis and a lying-in-bed selfie of Charlie biting his lip, eyes dark with hunger. Eli immediately made it Charlie’s contact photo.

All in all, everything was going well. Eli was riding the new-relationship high, and Charlie was pretty much everything he’d been searching for.

Except for one small problem.

Charlie was still evasive about certain topics. Not simply his alleged boring office job, but where he’d gone to school, what he’d studied, and what his plans for the future were. These were questions Eli asked every potential partner. It was important to know that their goals and ambitions lined up. But Charlie kept brushing him off, usually with a joke response or a subtle change of topic.

Eli was letting it go, for now. It was still early enough that he didn’t feel the need to know where Charlie saw himself in five years. But eventually, Charlie was either going to have to open up on his own, or Eli would have to confront him. He wasn’t looking forward to that conversation, because if Charlie really was dodging him on purpose, there had to be a reason, and Eli had a sneaking suspicion he already knew what it was.

But right now, he was happy to bask in the golden glow of infatuation.

By the time Friday rolled around, he was so impatient, he felt like he was going to fly out of his skin. Anette noticed his jitters and pulled him aside at the end of their shift to ask what was up.

“I have a date with Charlie tonight,” Eli said as they stood by their respective lockers, packing away their gear. He explained their plans, trying not to let too much excitement drip into his tone.

“That’s great!” Anette had a devilish grin on her face. “I was hoping you’d decide to see him. So, are you over your whole thing where you thought he might be the—”

“Shhh!” Eli glanced around. No one was paying attention to them, but the station was still packed. Anyone could overhear them. “Don’t say it. But yeah, I’m over it. I’ll feel better when we catch the guy, but you were right. It was silly of me to jump to conclusions.
